I’m still stewing over Daniel Lewis an hour later when Ollie stands up and announces, for what must be the ninth time this week, ‘I’m going to Cath’s, do you want anything?’

‘Do you know, he’s not as clever as he thinks he is,’ I reply.

He looks confused. ‘What do you mean?’

‘Daniel Lewis,’ I say impatiently. ‘This scheme he’s worked on elsewhere – the one he’s supposedly been given this award for—’

Ollie sinks back down into his seat. ‘I think he probably has been given this award, Zoe – in the photograph, he does appear to be holding a plaque to prove it.’

‘Never mind that. If he’s dealt with other people then they’ll know how dodgy he is. And they might be willing to provide testimonies to prove it.’

Ollie sighs. ‘What’s wrong with you today? You seem stressed again.’

‘I’m not stressed,’ I snap. ‘Even though there’s no sniff of a story good enough to make the front page of our launch issue, I’m trying to organise a carnival for the entire town when I can’t organise my washing basket, I have no idea what I’m going to put in the sports pages, Charlie keeps asking me why his dad hasn’t replied to my text yet and this idiot is wasting my time with self-promotional press releases.’ I inhale deeply, exhausted with the effort of that speech alone.

Ollie walks around to the back of my chair and starts massaging my shoulders. ‘Woah, easy tiger. I thought we’d agreed, after you tried to suggest that Jürgen Klopp was the manager of Everton, thereby confirming your complete ignorance of all sporting matters, that I’d take on the sports pages?’

I shrug his hands off me, exasperated. ‘Yes, but all I ever see you doing is updating your social media. Have you even written any sports news yet?’

He recoils, hurt, and a wave of shame hits me. ‘Ollie, I’m sorry,’ I say in a quiet voice.

Ollie goes back to his seat and starts searching for files on his computer. ‘I’ve written plenty of stories, actually,’ he says sulkily. ‘I’ll send them over to you so you can see them.’

I stand up now and walk around to his side of the desk. ‘Look, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have snapped. I’m feeling the pressure – on a number of levels. Ollie, I couldn’t do this without you, I know that. It won’t happen again.’

He looks up at me. ‘Zoe, why are you so determined that this guy’s dodgy? We haven’t seen anything at this point to suggest that’s the case.’

I try not to roll my eyes. ‘Ollie, you’re such a decent person, you always see the best in everyone. But haven’t you seen those comments on the Westholme Community Facebook Page? There’s a general consensus that he must be giving out backhanders left, right and centre to make this happen.’

I move back to my computer ‘No, he’s definitely dodgy, and I’m going to talk to these people he’s worked with to prove it.’
